I Never Called It Bleisure
The cost of "Since I'm Already There..."
The travel industry has a word for it.
Bleisure.
Business plus leisure.
Stay the weekend.
Explore the city.
Make the most of the airfare.
It always sounded clever.
It never sounded honest.
The more I traveled, the more I realized something.
It isn't really about where you are.
It's about where your mind is.
You can be sitting in front of the ocean...
...while mentally replaying yesterday's meeting.
Answering emails between museum visits.
Checking notifications over breakfast.
Planning your next event before you've finished enjoying the last one.
Your body arrived.
Your nervous system never did.
For a long time, I thought adding a few personal days onto a work trip was enough.
Now I think recovery deserves its own space.
Not because work is bad.
Because rest has a job to do, too.
These days, when I'm tempted to say,
"Since I'm already there..."
I ask myself a different question.
Will staying longer actually help me recover?
Or am I simply changing the view while carrying the same weight?
Sometimes the best trip isn't the one you extend.
It's the one you leave behind long enough to miss.
